Our Story
Our founder Abdus worked for a national driving school after qualifying as an ADI, and found their approach of 1 to 2 hours a week to be very inefficient. The week gap between lessons meant that learners often forgot what they had learned the week before, and had to retrain for the first half of the second session.
After a frustrating few months of this, Abdus started to research the best ways of learning to drive, and how to teach students efficiently and safely while promoting first-time passes. That's when he decided to leave his position with the national driving school, and started working as an independent ADI specialising in one week intensive and semi-intensive driving courses.
Leaders in research and development, Abdus and LIDT showed a real commitment to teaching from day one, using pictures of accidents, satellite images to explain how to negotiate complex roundabouts and gyratories, 1st generation satellite navigations and even portable DVD players (before the smartphone era!) in order to stress the importance of proper technique, and to reduce and avoid accidents. LIDT was also the first driving school in the UK to offer driving lessons in a Tesla Model 3, introducing learner drivers to electric vehicles and autonomous driving. Tesla tuition is not currently available; this page will be updated if it becomes available again.
LIDT now has over 100 local driving instructors who teach skills for life, not just the skills required to pass a driving test. With ongoing R&D we have developed and launched the LIDT App, and our training programmes and ADIs really set the bar for best-practice driving instruction.
At LIDT, our ethos is simple. Pass your test as soon as possible, and drive safe for life. That's what's helped us to build a network of over 100 approved driving instructors, and we are continuing to go from strength to strength, saving our students hundreds of pounds along the way. Nearly 30,000 people in the UK each year are killed or seriously injured in driving accidents (DfT, 2024). Our aim at LIDT is to be a part of the national effort to reduce the number of accidents, increase the national pass rate and make our roads a safe place for everyone.
