How Many Times Can You Change Your Driving Test in 2026?

How Many Times Can You Change Your Driving Test in 2026

How many times can a learner actually change a driving test in 2026 before it starts creating real problems? That is the question catching a lot of people out now. The rules are stricter than they used to be, and that changes how learners need to plan. A car driving test booking can now be changed up to 2 times.

After that, it has to be cancelled and booked again if another date is needed. That may sound like a small rule change, but it affects timing, lesson planning, and overall test preparation much more than many learners first realise. That is also why some learners start looking at a 5 Day intensive driving course when they want their lessons and test date to line up more sensibly.

What Learners Need to Know

Rule Old Rules New Rules From When
Number of changes allowed Up to 6 changes Only 2 changes Since 31 March 2026
Who can book your test You or your driving instructor Only you Since 12 May 2026
Who can manage your test You or your driving instructor Only you Since 12 May 2026
Where you can move your test Any test centre Only to the 3 nearest test centres From 9 June 2026

These rules apply to car driving tests, and DVSA also says the learner must book, change, swap, or cancel the test themselves. Instructors are not allowed to do it for them.

Why This Matters More Than People Think

A lot of learners change dates because they panic, lose confidence, or realise their lessons are not lining up properly. happens more often than people admit.. But with only 2 changes allowed, wasting one change on an avoidable reschedule can leave a learner with no flexibility when it actually matters.

That is one reason some learners book a 5 Day intensive driving course close to the test date. It keeps practice fresh and cuts down the long gaps that often lead to rescheduling. LIDT says DVSA research shows learners take around 45 hours with an instructor plus 22 hours of private practice on average to pass, which is why concentrated training can help some people stay test-ready.

A one week driving course can also make planning easier because the lessons and tests are tied together more tightly. Less drift. Less second-guessing.

A Few Practical Things to Remember

  • Give enough notice if changing or cancelling, because DVSA increased the notice period to 10 full working days from April 2025 to avoid losing the fee.
  • From 9 June 2026, learners moving a test can only move it to one of the 3 nearest driving test centres.
  • If a learner has already used both changes, cancelling and rebooking resets the change limit.

That last bit matters quite a lot. In many cases, a 1 Week driving course London option feels easier to manage than months of scattered lessons.

Conclusion

So, in 2026, the answer is simple: a learner can change a car driving test 2 times. After that, it has to be cancelled and booked again. That is why timing matters more now than it used to.

At LIDT, we have been helping learners with intensive driving support in London since 2003. We work with 100+ DVSA-approved instructors, and our site reflects 1,774 five-star reviews from learners who have trained with us. For learners looking into a 1 Week driving course London option, we focus on building a clearer plan around lessons, timing, and test readiness. Learners must give at least 10 full working days’ notice when changing or cancelling, otherwise the test fee may be forfeited.

FAQs

Can a learner still change the test more than twice by calling DVSA?

No. For car tests, the 2026 limit is 2 changes. After that, the learner needs to cancel and rebook.

Does cancelling a test reset the change count?

Yes. DVSA’s 2026 Q&A says cancelling and rebooking resets the change limit.

Can an instructor book or change the car driving test?

No. The learner has to do it themselves for car driving tests.

How much notice is needed to change or cancel without losing the fee?

DVSA requires 10 full working days’ notice for car tests.

Is intensive training helpful before a fixed test date?

It can be, especially for learners who want skills to stay fresh and closely timed to the exam. LIDT builds lesson timetables around the test date for that reason.
