Driving Test Booking: Why Monday Slots Are So Hard to Get

Driving Test Booking in 2026-Monday Slots

Getting a car practical driving test has become one of the hardest parts of learning to drive. You can be ready for your test, have your instructor’s approval and still struggle to find an appointment that works for you. When a suitable slot does appear, there is no guarantee it will remain available while you complete the booking.

The rules have also changed in 2026. Since 12 May, only the learner can book, change, cancel or swap their own car practical driving test. Your instructor, a family member or a third-party service cannot do this on your behalf. However, you can still receive support while you complete the booking yourself.

So, when should you look for a test? Is Monday morning still worth checking? And what can you do if you cannot find a suitable appointment?

This guide explains what to expect when trying to book your driving test, how the new rules affect learners and how LIDT can support you through the process.

When Should You Look for DVSA Driving Test Slots?

Monday morning is often a time when learners actively check for new availability, but there is no single release time that applies to every test centre.

Test availability can change because of cancellations, changes to examiner availability and other scheduling factors. This means it is better not to rely entirely on one particular day or time.

If you are looking for a DVSA driving test, being ready to act when a suitable appointment becomes available can make a difference. It also helps to be flexible about your preferred test centre, date and time where possible.

When DVSA Releases Driving Test Slots on Mondays

  • The Typical Release Window

Monday mornings are often a good time for learners to check for new DVSA driving test availability. However, there is no single release time that applies to every test centre, and the number of appointments available can vary.

New slots can appear when the DVSA updates test-centre availability, while cancellations can also create appointments at short notice. This means it is worth checking regularly rather than relying on one specific time each Monday.

If you are trying to book your driving test, being ready to act when a suitable appointment appears can help. Having some flexibility around your preferred date, time or test centre may also give you more options.

  • How It Varies by Test Centre and Region

Availability can vary between test centres. Busy centres may have fewer suitable appointments because of higher demand, while availability at other centres can depend on examiner capacity, cancellations and changes to the testing schedule. There is no universal release pattern that applies to every centre.

Why Monday Availability Can Vary

  • Regional Demand and Examiner Availability

The number of available tests depends partly on local demand and examiner capacity. When demand is high, appointments can be difficult to find, while changes to examiner availability can affect the number of tests offered at a particular centre.

Availability can also change during the week, so Monday should not be the only time you check if you are looking for an earlier test.

  • Bank Holidays and Seasonal Peaks

Bank holidays and busy periods, such as school holidays, can make it harder to find a suitable test slot. If you have a specific date in mind, keep checking rather than waiting for one particular day.

  • Cancellations and Last-Minute Availability

A cancellation can create a new appointment even when a test centre previously showed no suitable dates. These slots can be taken quickly, particularly at busy centres.

How Can LIDT Help You Book Your Driving Test?

The 2026 changes mean learners now have to book and manage their own car practical driving test. However, that does not mean you have to work through the process without support. LIDT can guide you through the booking process and help you find a suitable test slot.

How LIDT Can Support You

  • Assisted booking: An LIDT operative can guide you through the GOV.UK booking process while you complete the booking yourself.
  • In-person or remote support: You can arrange assisted booking at the LIDT office or receive guidance remotely by video call.
  • Help finding a suitable slot: If you’re struggling to find a practical test date that works for you, our team can help you understand your options and guide you through the available choices.
  • Test-day support: If you have already booked your test but your instructor is unavailable, LIDT can help you find an available instructor and test car, subject to availability.
  • Intensive preparation: If you need to get test-ready quickly, you can combine test booking support with an intensive driving course in London, giving you focused lessons before your test date.

We Still Book These Tests for You Without Restrictions

The 2026 rules apply to car practical tests only. LIDT can still book the following tests directly on your behalf, just as before:

  • Theory tests
  • Motorcycle tests
  • Lorry / HGV tests
  • Bus tests
  • ADI Part 2 and Part 3 tests

No restrictions, no changes to these services, and we still book these tests for you directly on your behalf.

So, while the new rules have changed how car practical tests are booked, they have not changed LIDT’s booking service for these other test categories.

If you’re ready to book your driving test or need help understanding the new process, LIDT can guide you through the next steps and help you prepare for the test day.

FAQs

What time should I check for driving test slots on Monday?

There is no guaranteed Monday release time for every test centre. If you are looking for a test, checking early and continuing to monitor availability can help you spot appointments when they appear.

Can someone else book my car practical driving test for me?

No. Since 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change, cancel or swap their own car practical driving test. Someone else can provide support, but the learner must complete the booking themselves.

Can LIDT help me book my car practical test?

Yes. LIDT provides assisted booking support for learners who train with LIDT. An LIDT operative can guide you through the GOV.UK process while you complete the booking yourself.

Can LIDT still book my theory test?

Yes. The 2026 rule changes apply to car practical tests. LIDT can still book theory tests directly on your behalf, with no changes to this service.
