DVSA Fees Are Rising, But What Are Instructors Getting Back in Return?

DVSA Instructor Fees Rise as Service Delays Increase Concerns in 2026

Driving instructors pay fees to qualify, maintain registration and complete assessments. But when service delivery comes under pressure, an important question follows: what are instructors getting back for their money?

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request reported by the Driving Instructors Association (DIA) found that DVSA income from ADI and PDI fees rose from £7.67 million in 2021/22 to £10.15 million in 2025/26, an increase of around 32%. The DVSA driving test booking system and instructor assessment services therefore deserve closer scrutiny.

What the Latest DVSA Test Fees Actually Tell Us

The official gov.uk fee schedule lists a standard car practical test at £62 on weekdays and £75 during evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Instructor-related charges are separate and include qualifying assessments, trainee licences and registration. DIA’s FOI figures cover income from these professional fee categories, not just learner practical tests.

Learners considering a driving crash course in London should check the official practical test fee before thinking of applying for one.

Do Higher Fees Bring Better Support for Instructors?

DIA’s August 2026 report questions the value instructors receive as DVSA income from professional fees grows. Its concerns include reduced service delivery and delays affecting instructor assessments. These issues matter because instructors need timely assessments and reliable administration to enter and remain in the profession.

Paying a fee does not guarantee priority appointments, compensation for lost working time or additional support. However, instructors can reasonably expect clear guidance, accessible assessment processes and transparent information about delays.

Before you book your driving test, speak to your instructor about your readiness and check their availability for the proposed date. This helps you choose a suitable appointment, avoid unnecessary changes to your lesson schedule and prepare for the test with greater confidence.

How Fee Changes Affect Learners and Instructors

Learners should budget separately for lessons, the official test fee and any agreed vehicle-use charge. Instructors can help by discussing readiness early and setting realistic expectations around lesson schedules.

The 2026 rules require learners to manage their own car tests. Since 31 March, they have been limited to two changes per booking. Since 12 May, instructors have no longer been allowed to manage car test bookings for pupils. Since 9 June, test-centre changes have also been restricted.

Before making a driving test booking, learners should check the latest official rules, confirm their instructor’s availability and choose a suitable date.

Wrapping Up

DIA’s figures show a substantial rise in reported ADI and PDI fee income, but the key question is how that income translates into services. Timely assessments, dependable administration and transparent performance reporting are important measures of value. Before making a DVSA driving test booking, learners should check current rules and discuss their readiness with their instructor.

As a reputed driving school, LIDT offers practical lessons and guidance to help learners prepare for their tests. We focus on building safe driving habits and confidence through structured training. Our aim is to help learners prepare effectively and make informed decisions before test day.
