How to Prepare for Your Practical Driving Test?

Practical Driving Test

I’m pretty good at driving during lessons, but what if I fail the test day? One of the most frequent questions learner drivers will ask before taking their practical driving test.

Fears of test-day nerves, forgetting to reverse-parallel park or making a single serious fault that might result in rejection. It can be a lot of pressure, particularly after spending hundreds of pounds on professional driving lessons.

The great news is that you can gain a lot of confidence and performance with proper preparation. You can pass your test by showing that you can drive safely, make sensible decisions and always follow the Highway Code.

Be familiar with what the Examiner is looking for

It’s useful to know how the assessment will be conducted before your test. The DVSA practical test takes 40 minutes and the examiner will be assessing your driving skills, following traffic signs or a Sat Nav (approx 20 minutes), hazard perception and one reversal manoeuvre safely.

Official driving test statistics from DVSA show that the driving test pass rate is around 47% to 48% across the country. This implies that almost half of the test takers pass their exam.

Simple actions such as:

  • Regularly using the MSM routine.
  • Sitting at the right speed (such as 30 mph in built-up areas and 70 mph on dual carriageways).
  • Identify and respond to road signs and road markings.
  • It is important to know what the examiner is looking for so you can concentrate on safe and consistent driving.

Develop Confidence by Practising Regularly

The more time you spend driving, the more comfortable you will be when you go for the test. The test standard is achieved by an average of 45 hours of professional lessons and 22 hours of private practice, as recommended by the DVSA.

Work on different types of roads, such as narrow residential roads, dual carriageways and complex multi-lane town centres.

  • Focus on the problem areas: If you are having trouble with spiral roundabouts, practice them more with your instructor.
  • Learn the manoeuvres: If forward bays or pulling up on the right are proving tricky, do this exercise more times until they are second nature.

Learners who receive professional tuition and practise privately in a family car (with the insurance for the learner and ‘L’ plates) acquire much greater hazard perception skills.

Take Mock Tests Seriously

Taking a formal driving lesson test will reveal the weaknesses before the actual driving test. Request your Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) to test you in 40 minutes in a realistic driving environment with exam conditions.

This will enable one to detect the following common fault conditions:

  • Not performing mirror checks before changing direction
  • Inadequate positioning of junctions.
  • Incorrect speed management
  • Hesitation at roundabouts

Solve these problems early to minimise the risk of repeating them during the actual assessment.

Try Intensive Training If You Are Short on Time

Some students require a quicker and more streamlined path to test preparedness. There is a possibility of doing an intensive programme that can help you get months of lessons in a few weeks’ time, which will be very concentrated.

When some candidates are looking into a driving test booking in London in one of the busy test centres, such as Hendon, Mitcham or Wood Green, they opt for a driving course that is tailored to meet their needs.

These are multi-hour daily lessons that are structured for focused practice on local test routes and build muscle memory in a short time.

Get ready for Test Day!

  • Get plenty of rest the night before: at least 8 hours.
  • Be on time: Make sure that you are at the test centre at least 10-15 minutes before your session.
  • Take your essentials: Your UK photo card driving licence. Those who already have a paper licence will need a passport as well.

Intensive training can even ensure that learners pass the driving test in a week, if they have recently failed and have a lot of driving experience.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for your practical driving test requires more than memorising a few reference points. It involves building confidence, gaining real-world experience on complex road structures, and developing safe driving habits for life.

Whether you need an intensive crash course or a realistic mock test with an expert ADI, at LIDT, our experienced instructors are ready to help. To take your final step to a full driving licence in the UK, give us a call today and book your driving lesson!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many different driving lessons do I have to take before I’m ready to take a driving test?

No fixed number because there is no set number. The majority of learners need plenty of practice to become safe and confident drivers in varying traffic situations.

What are the top 10 driving test failure errors?

Common causes are the poor observation at junctions, the use of the wrong mirrors, insufficient steering control and poor positioning on the road.

Is it a good idea to do a mock driving test before a real one?

Yes. The mock tests act as a way to find out where you are having trouble and give you practice in the format and pressure of the driving test.

Will online intensive driving courses improve my passing time?

In addition to the targeted practice and professional guidance, intensive courses can accelerate the development of skills.
