Changing a driving test used to feel easier. If the date was wrong, or your instructor was not free, you could move it more times. That is no longer the case for car driving tests.
DVSA now allows only 2 changes to a car driving test booking. This rule started on 31 March 2026. A change can mean moving the date, changing the time, moving the test centre, or swapping the appointment with another learner.
So the 2-change rule is simple on paper, but it can catch learners out quickly. You may use one change because your instructor is not available. Then you may use the second because the test centre is too far. After that, you have no changes left.
What Counts As A Change?
DVSA is clear about what counts. These changes use up one of your 2 chances:
- Changing the test date
- Changing the test time
- Changing the test centre
- Swapping your appointment with another learner
If you change more than one thing at the same time, such as the date and test centre together, DVSA says it still counts as one change.
Some things do not count as a change. Updating your address, changing contact details, or adding or removing your instructor’s reference number does not use one of your 2 changes. If DVSA changes your test because of something like bad weather, your 2 changes can be reset.
What Happens When Your 2 Changes Run Out?
Once your 2 changes are used, you cannot keep moving the same test booking. DVSA says you will need to cancel the test and book a driving test again if you need more changes.
This is where learners need to be careful. Cancelling and rebooking can mean losing your current slot. You may also have to wait longer for another date, especially in busy areas.
You can get a full refund if you cancel at least 10 full working days before the test date. If you leave it too late, you may lose the fee.
Why This Matters For Learners In London
London test centres can be busy, and learners often feel pressure to take whatever slot appears. But that can create problems later.
Before you book driving test slots, check three things:
- Can your instructor take you on that date?
- Can you practise near that test centre?
- Are you actually close to test standard?
This matters even more if you are planning an intensive driving course in London. A short course needs proper timing. If the test date is too early, the course may feel rushed. If the test centre is wrong, your practice may not match the roads you will face.
How To Avoid Running Out Of Changes
Do not use a change just because a slightly better slot appears. Check the full plan first. A better approach is:
- Speak to your instructor before changing anything
- Check the test centre distance
- Check if your lessons line up with the new date
- Move date and centre together if both need changing
- Avoid booking driving test faraway centres just because they have earlier slots
From 9 June 2026, DVSA also limited test centre moves. Learners can only move a test to the 3 nearest centres, rather than any centre they choose. That makes the first centre choice more important.
