As driving evolves, so do the tests to assess our competency behind the wheel. One notable change in recent years has been the exclusion of the reversing around a corner challenge. But just because they don’t test it during a fast-track driving test anymore doesn’t mean knowing how to handle it isn’t still important out there on the real roads.
What is this corner reversal thing anyway? Well, picture this – you’re driving down a road and need to turn around at the next corner. Instead of going around the block, you stop before the intersection, pass it, and then cautiously back your ride into the crossing street. No doubt it seemed daunting to envision during a test! But the truth is, out in the real world, it can get you out of a pinch. So make sure to ask your instructor to teach you this skill during your 5 day intensive driving course in London.
Back in the day, this was right up there in the fast track driving test with other classic driving tests like parallel parking and turning in the road. But now you just need to focus on pulling over safely instead. Even so, being able to smoothly spin your vehicle around 180 degrees without a hitch is still a handy trick to have in your back pocket whenever the need arises.
Now, hypothetically, if this task was still part of the test, you can bet inspectors would be watching your every move like a hawk. Their top priority is your awareness – constantly checking mirrors while smoothly signalling each step of the way. Proper vehicle control is also key to judging whether the corner is clear to reverse into. One wrong move, and it’s game over!
Trick of Corner Reversal
Here’s the step-by-step guide to get you through a corner reversal with flying colours:
- Park on the left side of the road before the turn.
- Drive past the intersection and stop in position.
- Start slowly reversing towards the turning point.
- Gradually back around the bend, hugging the curb all the way.
While it’s no longer a graded part of the test, being able to wheel backwards around a corner safely opens doors for you out on the road. What if you miss your turnoff or encounter an obstacle? A slick corner reversal allows you to redirect without hassle.
