What Are the First Things New Drivers Learn Behind the Wheel?

book a theory test

When you start your driving lessons, you’ll feel very excited, nervous and uncertain about what happens during your first lesson. You may worry about being thrown directly into heavy traffic or having to perform complex manoeuvres, such as parking within your first class. The reality is that driving instructors are trained to gradually introduce new drivers like you to the world of driving and build confidence so you can fully enjoy the experience of learning to drive rather than being scared out of your wits!

Thus, if you are planning to book a theory test this month or thinking about taking a ‘crash course’ to quicken the process, then a good rule of thumb is to familiarise yourself with the fundamentals and feel comfortable.

Lesson 1: Getting Comfortable Behind the Wheel

Your first time in the driver’s seat isn’t about perfect driving; it’s about getting familiar. This is the session where you learn how the car works and how to be in control without feeling overwhelmed.

What you’ll cover:

  • You will learn about the controls found in all cars, including the pedals, steering wheel, indicator lights, handbrake, and dashboard.
  • The importance of safety is emphasised by checking mirrors before moving off, adjusting your seat, and understanding blind spots.

Lesson 2: Basic Manoeuvres and Road Skills

With the indicators sorted, this is now the first ‘real’ lesson in learning to drive on the road, but still on quieter roads with plenty of guidance. You can also go for a 1 Week crash course in London, which is ideal for quick and effective results.

You will learn about:

  • Learning how to increase/decrease your speed without any sudden, jerk-like stops.
  • Finding out when/how to change gears safely, without putting too much strain on the clutch.
  • Turning, stopping and positioning when approaching a crossing because practising these helps you to make a safe choice.

Lesson 3: Early Traffic Experience and Parking

Familiarise you with the look and feel of real-world driving. There won’t be any extreme traffic scenes yet, like the roundabouts in central London, but you will get to practice your skills on residential roads.

In this, you will learn about:

  • Identify road signs, interpret traffic control devices (signals), and observe surrounding vehicles.
  • Familiarisation with both a parking space for garage parking, as well as parallel parking, to improve spatial awareness.
  • Learning to drive on the actual route and becoming comfortable around other road users like cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles.

Wrapping Up

Different people learn at different speeds; however, they begin with the same foundation of car control, safety, and coordination. Once these lessons ‘click’ for you, everything else will flow much smoothly. So, if you want to learn to drive with a 5-star driving school on Google, trust LIDT. Our trainers are fully qualified Approved Driving Instructors (ADI), registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and are vetted by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
